Number in Flyer turns Shoppers into an Angry Mob Vancouver - 12000 shoppers lined up in front of their local Wal-Mart to take advantage of a 100 % off sale on all items. But they turned ugly when they learned that the flyer advertising the event was wrong, and the sale was only for 10 % off. Manager Henry Wonmaster told reporters that he had no idea that there was a misprint in the paper, but he knew that 12000 people on a Monday morning was odd...He spoke to a shopper outside the store, and was horrified to learn that the flyer was advertising a 100 % off sale. Before police arrived, the shoppers turned ugly, overturning cars and smashing windows. 200 specially equipped riot police managed to arrive just before the crowd broke through the doors. Says Hilda Banister - "I wanted to get my hands on the manager and shake his skinny butt into oblivion...He is such a crook..". Other shoppers also threatened the manager, who escaped through the back door under police protection. The other employees of the store stayed until the crowd had dispersed. Anna Georgiopoulos, 78, had this to say - " I wanted to buy a doll for my granddaughter, and the 100 % off was perfect. When the manager told us it was a mistake, I grabbed my handbag and whopped him upside the head several times. Then I jabbed my cane into his groin. The lunkhead deserved it...". The printer responsible for the error in the flyer realizes that the mistake could prove costly, but defends his job - "I don't know how it happened, but even I was at the store to take advantage of the sale !!".
