CONSIDERATE
PART 6

In the bright light Jason looked at his hosts. The man was around forty; the
woman considerably younger, twenty-eight, or perhaps thirty. There was something
definitely attractive about them. It was not their appearance so much, for in
appearnce they were merely ordinary people. But they moved and talked with
curious singleness of purpose. They reminded Jason of a pair of gray doves.
Looking around the room, Jason saw the telephone in a corner, and noticed
with some surprise that it was one of the old-style phones. The man was
watching him with peculiar intentness. "We haven't tried to use the telephone
tonight," the man said abruptly, "but I'm afraid it won't work." "I don't
see how it can," the woman added. Jason took the receiver off the hook.
No dial tone. He tried again, several times; but the line remained dead.
The man shook his head slowly, "I didn't think it would work," he said.
"Wires down or something, I suppose." "Funny thing I haven't seen one of those
old-style phones in years. Didn't think they used them anymore," Jason replied.
