PART 18

But then the man stopped. "Well, I suppose you'd better be going along,"
he said, "good night."
"Good night," Jason returned. "And thanks, I'll stop by one of these
days and say hello." "You won't find us here," the man said simply. He
is crazy! Jason thought. But he said, "You aren't going to do anything
funny to old Wynn after I'm gone, are you?" The man shook his head. "No,
don't worry." Jason let in the clutch and stepped on the gas. He wanted
to get out of there as quickly as possible.
In little Abby Falls he went into an all-night lunch and telephoned
the police that an unconscious man was sitting in a truck three or four
miles back on the detour. Then he drove home.
Early the next morning, on his way to work, he drove back over the
detour. He kept watching for the little house. When it came in sight,
he recognized it easily from the contour of the rooms, the spacing of the
windows, and the little overhang above the door.
But, as he came closer, he saw that it was deserted. The windows were
out; the steps had fallen in. The clapboards were gray and weather
beaten, and naked rafters showed through holes in the roof.
He stopped his truck and sat there besides the road for a little
while, his face oddly pale.
